What My Grown Son Uses When He Comes Home from College

What do you keep at home for your grown son when he comes back to stay? I thought I knew the answer. Then my son spent the summer with me before his final year of college, and I realized I was remembering the boy who had left instead of paying attention to the man who had returned.

During his first couple of summers away, he did not come home at all. Summer jobs and internships kept him busy, and he was building a life that did not pause when the school year ended. By the time he came to stay with me again, he had a full beard, his own routines, and definite opinions about the things he used every day.

That same son is the little boy pictured in my story about Reinventing Life After 50. Seeing Brandon at elementary school age in that early post, and then welcoming him home at 21, makes the years between those photos feel real.

I had to learn who he was now.

From Old Spice to Reading Ingredient Labels

When he and his brother were teenagers, they both asked for Old Spice shower products. I never understood it. To me, Old Spice seemed like an old man choice, not something teenage boys would want. But they asked for it, so I bought it. I did not need to understand the appeal. I simply got them what they wanted.

Years later, I stocked the bathroom with shower products that smelled wonderful to me. He did not use them. Instead, he brought the products he had chosen for himself.

The black bottles and the beast logo caught my attention first. He was using Johnny Slicks Original Body Wash, along with the brand’s shampoo and conditioner. This time, scent was not the whole story. He had become ingredient conscious and had taken the time to read the labels.

The Shower Products He Chose for Himself

He chose Johnny Slicks Original Shampoo, Johnny Slicks Original Conditioner, and the body wash because he wanted a more considered ingredient list and a straightforward grooming system.

The brand lists castile soap, coconut oil, castor oil, vitamin E, activated charcoal, walnut shells, and jojoba beads in the body wash. The shampoo and conditioner include aloe, glycerin, shea butter, and oils such as olive, sunflower, coconut, and jojoba.

That is what made the products interesting to me. A young man who once asked for Old Spice without offering an explanation had become someone who read a label and made a deliberate choice. The products were not important because I had selected them. They were important because he had.

The Electronics He Actually Uses at Home

The bathroom was not the only place where I had to stop guessing. Between his phone, tablet, watch, earbuds, and other electronics, a single charger was never enough. What I Now Keep at Home for My Grown Son

I am not trying to preserve his childhood room exactly as he left it. I am trying to make the house work for the person he is today.

The shower products he actually uses. Not the ones I chose because I liked the scent.
A charging station and spare cables. Enough ports for the devices that travel with him.
Coffee he likes. A small detail that makes the first quiet hour of the morning easier.
A few familiar snacks. Not an entire grocery store, just things I know he will reach for.
Fresh towels and clean bedding. Simple comforts that make a longer visit feel settled.
Room for his things. Space in the bathroom, a clear place to charge devices, and somewhere to unpack.

None of this is extravagant. It is simply more thoughtful than filling a shelf with what I assume he should like.

Respecting the Man Who Came Home

There is a particular kind of mothering that begins when a child is no longer a child. It is less about deciding for him and more about being curious about his decisions.

This summer, that meant noticing what he reached for, asking why he chose it, and making room for the answers. The body wash, the shampoo, and even the tangle of charging cables were small clues. They showed me where his preferences had changed and where he had become more intentional.

The goal is not to make him feel as though he never left. It is to welcome him as the person who came home.
